A large crack in a flood defence wall in Portsmouth is getting bigger, the leader of the council has warned.
A section of promenade has been cordoned off after the crack appeared behind the Pyramids Centre in Southsea, some time between 25 and 26 December.
Portsmouth City Council's Donna Jones tweeted that it had "eroded more overnight with the hole getting bigger. The next 24 hours are key."
The council begins rebuilding the wall on Wednesday at 07:00 GMT.
It said it was the earliest the repair work could begin "due to the high tides and strong winds, as well as the availability of machinery and materials". Work will take place over two weeks as the hole is filled and 2,000 tonnes of rock delivered.
The crack will cost £250,000 to repair, with the funding expected to come from the Environment Agency.
Rob New, cabinet member for environment and community safety, said: "Everyone should be aware this area of the esplanade is a very dangerous place at the moment as the defences are structurally unsafe.
"We have put barriers in place to block access to the part of the esplanade affected but we are unable to prevent access via the beach due to the tides."
Ms Jones said the authority had already been working on a multimillion-pound replacement scheme of old sea defences, including this section.
The Huddersfield Road Bridge that goes over the River Calder is the main route into the town and used by buses and heavy goods vehicles.
The crack in the structure has been apparent for some time but residents are now concerned that the unprecedented water levels could have caused more damage to the bridge.

Britain's topsy turvy weather means that spring has come four months early with this December being the warmest on record, according to latest figures from the Met Office.
As storms and floods continue to batter communities across northern parts of the UK, experts also revealed that it had been the second wettest December in more than 100 years.
Across the the country an average 211mm of rain fell during the month. Only December 1929 was wetter, with 213mm of rain.
Scotland and Wales both had their wettest December since 1910, the earliest year on record - 333.1mm and 321mm respectively.
December temperatures for the whole of the UK reached a spring-like 8C, which is 4.1C above the long-term average. The previous record was 6.9C, set in 1934.
The Met Office said: "This means the temperatures this December 2015 were closer to those normally experienced during April or May."
This year is on course for being one of the 10 wettest on record in the UK. The wettest year was 2000, when 1,337mm of rain fell across the country. Provisional figures for the year up to December 29 show 1,270mm of rain.
Storm Desmond was largely responsible for making December a record-breaking month, say the experts, with unprecedented amounts of rain falling on the Lake District.
The Christmas period was described as "unsettled, wet and mild". Hard on the heels of Storm Desmond, Storm Eva brought more gales and heavy rain to many northern areas on Christmas Eve, then Storm Frank moved in to cause more mayhem, with Scotland and Northern Ireland bearing the brunt.
December has also been the fourth wettest on record in Northern Ireland, said the Met Office. But rainfall levels have been much closer to average in central and southern England.
Experts lined up to make the connection between the extreme weather and global warming.
Climate scientist Professor Piers Forster, from the University of Leeds, said: "There is no doubt in my mind that climate change is partly responsible for the flooding across the north of England. These floods are in part due to greenhouse gas emissions."
He said the unusually high temperatures resulted from the combined effect of a strong El Nino ocean-warming system in the Pacific and a man-made global warming trend.
Colombia has declared a red alert because of low water levels in two key rivers which supply hundreds of towns and cities in the South American country, President Juan Manuel Santos said on Wednesday.
A fifth of Colombia's municipalities are already under water rationing measures as the El Nino phenomenon cuts down rainfall dramatically.
The declaration makes it likely the government will soon extend rationing measures and impose a limit on water consumption in homes, though Santos offered no further details.
The country's weather agency recommended the measure, the president said.
"I'm declaring the red alert for low levels in the Magdalena and Cauca rivers in 23 provinces," Santos said at a government event.
Future energy rationing measures could be a possibility, the president added. Seventy percent of Colombia's energy is supplied hydro-electrically.
The El Nino weather pattern is linked to the warming of the Pacific Ocean and tends to leave Colombia and Central America drier.
The drought prompted the coffee federation to modify export standards in October as nearly half the country's growing regions are affected by drought.
Tropical Cyclone Ula is expected to pass through the kingdom of Tonga early in the weekend.
The category one system developed on Wednesday night and has caused stormy weather across much of the south west Pacific.
Ula, which is currently compact and producing winds of 85 kilometres an hour, is about 420 kilometres east-south-east of Pago Pago heading in a southwesterly direction at just over 30 kilometres an hour.
Eli Funaki from the Fiji Meteorological Service says Ula will cross through the northern part of Tonga late Friday night at the earliest.
"The current projection is that it will pass just due south of the Niuas and between the Niuas and Vava'u. We're looking at late tomorrow because in turning it slows down and the models show that it will be tomorrow or even in the early hours of Saturday."
The activity at Fuego might be picking up towards a new paroxysm (eruptive phase with strongly increased effusion rate, resulting in lava fountaining and lava flows). We camped on the SW side of the volcano last night, and observed mild to strong strombolian explosions that occurred at intervals between 1 and 10 minutes. The strongest explosions sent incandescent material to heights of up to approx. 500 m and similar distances. One particularly intense explosion was accompanied by a very strong shock wave. Although not seen directly from our location, a pyroclastic flow occurred around 10:15 (local time): we observed the co-ignimbrite ash plume rising from what was likely a collapse of a new lava flow on the southern slope. According to staff at the Panimache volcano observatory, who confirmed our observation, the pyroclastic flow could have reached a length of 7 km and seems to herald the start of the 14th paroxysm of Fuego in 2015... Following the initial sighting of the brownish ash plume, it gradually spread around the whole southern slopes and caused fine ash fall in the area lasting about 2 hours, graying all vegetation...
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Traffic being diverted for the next four to five days while MSD responds to a giant sink hole on Phillips Lane.
A stretch of the road is partially closed between Freedom Way and Preston Highway because of the massive hole caused by a four foot leaking pipe underground.
Only the left lane of the road is blocked, so you cannot turn right when you're getting off the Watterson at the exit to the fairgrounds.
"We have a 48 inch line there and it had a leak in it and it undermines the ground, and then over time the ground gives way and that's where sink holes often come from,” Dennis Thomasson with MSD said.
The bigger the pipe, the bigger the hole. This one is about 30 feet long, 19 feet wide and 18 feet deep. Thomasson says it will take between four and five days to repair the pipe, fill the hole, and have Phillips lane operating normally.
"We have crews that do this all the time, the folks that were on scene there this morning, that's their primary job."

Compared to a longer period of time the number of Red Alert Earthquake for the last 30 days of 10 is actually in the Middle. So this tells us the earth is stable at the moment. When numbers begin to near the 20 mark, this is a time of warning.
The Image above shows the Earthquake reading everyday. The rise during November was caused by Saturn lining up the Sun on its backside. Now the quake numbers seem to be dropping Except the Trend line (black) is predicting that the earthquakes are evening out or moreover rising again.
The Image above shows the Monthly average of Red Alert Earthquakes. What is intriguing about the trend is that the Quakes do not seemed to have fallen down to a minimum Average of around 4-6. They have kept a stronger base line of around 8-12. This is clearly seen when you look at the Graph from months June to December. Is this a sign that The Throne of God is nearing and the Energy is increasing gradually through out all the Heavenly bodies? Only time will tell of course...

Disaster authorities in Vanuatu are closely monitoring unprecedented simultaneous increases in activity at three of the country's volcanoes.
The Vanuatu Geohazards Department has put out level 2 alerts for both the northern and southern volcanoes of Ambrym and Tanna with local communities and tourists banned from visiting the rim of these craters.
There is a lesser level 1 alert for a volcano on Ambae island.
Geohazard officer Eslien Garaebiti says increased activity at all volcanoes has never been seen before and says the department is particularly worried about the Tanna and Ambrym craters.
"They are under major level of unrest so they are the ones that are catching our attention at the moment for any increase of activity we would respond or in backing up our monitoring system for those volcanoes."
Vanuatu's volcanoes are among the most accessible in the world and are a major attraction for the tourist industry.
A Bahraini F-16 jet taking part in a mostly Gulf Arab military campaign in Yemen has crashed in southern Saudi Arabia, according to a coalition statement on the Saudi state news agency.
The pilot survived after the plane suffered a technical fault and came down in the Jizan region, the statement added, without going into further detail.

About 2,000 homes are currently without electricity across Northern Ireland as Storm Frank brings heavy rain and gales in from the west.
Severe weather warnings are in place for Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning.
An amber warning for heavy rain has been issued, valid from 21:00 GMT on Tuesday until 07:00 GMT on Wednesday.
The warning is the second highest that can be issued and means people should be prepared for disruption.
A yellow warning for gale and severe gale force winds is in place from 15:00 GMT until 08:00 GMT on Wednesday.
South easterly wind gusts of 55 to 65 mph - perhaps 70 mph along coastal areas - may cause damage to trees and possibly the electricity network.
Larges waves will bring dangerous conditions to coastal roads.
A yellow warning for rain is also in place from 19:00 GMT to 1500 GMT on Wednesday.
Between 20 to 40 millimetres of rain is expected widely, with up to 70 millimetres over the hills and mountains. This comes on top of Monday night's rain and is likely to cause some further flooding.

On Monday (Dec. 28), a sunspot cluster erupted, blasting an M-class flare directly at Earth. The extreme-ultraviolet radiation immediately washed over our upper atmosphere, initiating an ionization event that caused a radio blackout over South America, Africa and the south Atlantic Ocean. The blackout may have been detected by mariners and ham radio operators in the 20MHz frequency range, according to SpaceWeather.com. Although the flare certainly wasn’t of the strength of a major X-class flare (the most powerful class of flare), this event did trigger a significant coronal mass ejection (CME) that is currently racing in the direction of Earth. Space weather forecasters predict a direct hit with Earth’s magnetic field on or around New Year’s Eve, potentially sparking some natural fireworks in the upper atmosphere just in time for 2016.
As firefighters mopped up the remains of a wildfire on the Southern California coast, authorities turned their focus to a new concern: a landslide if rain pounds the charred hills.
In a heavy rain, the denuded soil could threaten nearby railroad tracks, U.S. 101 and the Pacific Coast Highway.
"Gravity's going to take it where it wants to go," Ventura County fire Capt. Mike Lindbery said, "and where it wants to go is down on the highway, across the railroad tracks and right into whatever is in its way."
On Sunday, hundreds of firefighters up the remnants of the wind-whipped wildfire that threatened dozens of coastal homes. The fire that scorched about 1,230 acres north of Ventura was 75 per cent contained, with full containment expected Tuesday, fire officials said.
The blaze erupted Friday night when high winds caused power lines on an oil field to arc. At its peak, the fire closed a 15-mile stretch of an adjacent, six-lane freeway, U.S. 101, and another major north-south route, the Pacific Coast Highway.
The winds eased Saturday, and the fire stopped growing. Evacuation orders for about 50 homes in Solimar Beach were rescinded.
On Sunday, about 300 firefighters were busy dousing hotspots in a stretch of coastal land that was thick with drought-dry brush.
An area of soaked ground in Fort Worth, after hours of rain, snow and sleet, buckled from the pressure Monday morning.
Concrete at the exit and shoulder on southbound Loop 820 at Sun Valley Drive broke away after the earth slid underneath it.
A utility truck was brought in to block and close the roadway. No word on how long cleanup and repair will take, or how long the highway exit will be closed.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported an ash eruption from the active crater of Kanlaon Volcano reaching as high as 4,500 meters above its summit on Sunday.
The heaving volcano has registered 29 earthquakes since Sunday after it erupted at about 1:29 p.m., spewing out columns of ash as high as 1 kilometer up into the air for about five minutes.
An explosion-type earthquake was felt at Intensity 2, accompanied by a rumbling sound from Barangay Cabagnaan, La Castellana; Sitio Guintubdan, Brgy Ara-al and Brgy. Yubo, La Carlota City and Brgy. Ilijan, Bago City.
The ash plume was also seen piercing the clouds above the active crater from the Southeastern side of the volcano, which, reports quoted Phivolcs as saying, may have reached as high as 4,500 meters above the summit.
Light ashfall was also experienced in Brgy. Miranda in Hinigaran and Pontevedra, reaching as far as Nueva Valencia on Guimaras Island.
Mt. Kanlaon’s activity was placed at alert level 1, meaning it is in a period of unrest.
Phivolcs also reminded the local government units and the public to strictly observe the 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.
“Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as airborne ash from a sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft,” Phivolcs added.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) encouraged residents in localities affected by the ashfall to wear masks and stay indoors if possible, as sulfuric odor was detected by the La Carlota City Volcano Observatory.
Zeaphard Caelian, head of the PDMPD, warned that sulphur from the ashfall is carcinogenic, or can cause cancer, and can also trigger asthma and other pulmonary problems.
“The children, the elderly and those with asthma should not be exposed and have to protect themselves from the ashfall,” he added.
Barangay health workers in the affected areas have been tasked to provide residents with protective masks.
